About Saudi Arabia

The history of Saudi Arabia can be traced back to the prehistoric time when human settlement and Ancient civilizations flourished in the Arabian Peninsula. Prophet Abraham, peace be upon Him, built Qaaba in Mecca and the Prophet Mohamed, peace be upon Him, spread Islam. Today over 1 billion Moslems pray 5times a day towards Mecca.


Area: Over 2million sq km. The coastal length along the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf exceeds 2300km. It is not totally flat; the Surrah Mountain chain has a peak of 3300 m above sea Level.

Population: Around 23 million people. The capital city of Riyadh has a population of 5.4 millions (2005). Around 27% of the Kingdom’s population is foreigners.

Infrastructure: There are 25 Airports in the kingdom, three of which are International: Dammam, Jeddah, and Riyadh. There are also 5 main Ports: Jeddah, Yanbu, Duba, Dammam and Jizan. The Road network is among the largest in the Arab world with over 120,000 km of paved roads which include major highways. The Railway net links Dammam with the capital, Riyadh.

Telecommunication: Saudi Arabia has a modern Telecommunication net work. There are over 7million Mobile phones in use by locals and expatriate residents.

Economy: GDP of Saudi Arabia (2005) is around 250 billion US$ and growing at a rate of around 3,5% per annum. Non oil exports are almost one third of the total exports.

Tourism: The two holly Cities of Mecca and Maddinah are considered as a dream to visit by over 1.0 Billion Moslem people around the world. Domestic tourism in Saudi Arabia is flourishing. According to WTO statistics, tourism sector in Saudi Arabia contributes over 22% of GDP. In the year 2004 over 9 million people visited Saudi Arabia from all over the world. The vast area of this country has approximately 12000 Tourist Attraction sites already registered/named by the Supreme Commission for Tourism. The world famous Madain Saleh in AlUla area is among these locations.
